I am an enthusiastic and dedicated chemical engineer focused on environmental remediation, process optimization and sustainability. Patient and down-to-earth, I take things one day at a time.
After studying chemical engineering at Tuks, I realized the importance of being a team player! Regardless of the situation, I always strive to do the best I can. I see failure as an opportunity to learn and develop new skills rather than an impassable brick wall — we all run into a few obstacles throughout our lives. I am highly motivated and hope to pass on the skills I have.
• NSC (Selly Park Secondary School)
• Diploma in Bioreactor Design (Alison)
• Diploma in Plant Cell Bioprocessing (Alison)
• BEng Chemical Engineering (University of Pretoria)
• I graduated as a Chemical Engineer from the University of Pretoria!
• I was a Dux Scholar with notable distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and IT.
• Having scored 90% for Additional Mathematics (an external certification), I was in the top 5% of candidates in the North West.
Mathematics
I always loved Mathematics but needed a tutor myself in high school. Hints and tips received in tutoring classes prevented the formation of innumerable mental blocks! As a result, I hope to actively engage with learners in a similar manner to pass on my knowledge, aiding them whenever possible.
Physical Science
Physical Science is fun provided essential concepts and definitions are understood and picturesque. During my Chemical Engineering course, Physics, Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry were covered extensively. As a tutor, I hope to make this subject enjoyable and keep the ball rolling!
Additional Mathematics
Additional Mathematics became an extra credit subject I took during high school due to the decision to study towards an Engineering degree. Differentiation, integration and matrices were covered extensively - this helped immensely during my first year at Tuks.
English
English delves into many nooks and crannies - from comprehensive reading to poetry, from worldly events to ancient plays, English is quite diverse. High school English opened my eyes to the connection between language, circumstance and innumerable worldly occurrences.
Mathematics Literacy
I gained valuable quantitative and estimation skills through Mathematics Literacy alongside Pure Mathematics, enhancing my performance in Chemical Engineering modules alongside Pure Mathematics."
Life Sciences (Biology)
I specialised in Environmental Sustainability and did my research on water treatment via adsorption using agro-based waste. Biology has always been a favourite subject, especially due to microscopy and hydroponics. In my opinion, it is essential for preservation!
Chemistry
Physical Chemistry was an essential part of my Chemical Engineering degree. Practicals involving titrations and distillation - and the really great products they formed - highlighted the fact that I was on the right career path. As a tutor, I hope to pass on the same, if not greater, love for it.
Mathematics
First-year Maths courses complemented the work I had discussed in Additional Maths at school. Second-year Maths improved my depth perception and provided essential skills for graphical analysis. Furthermore, skills developed in said Maths courses provide a foundation for many basal problems.
Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering delves into the world of microbes, processes and reactors. Designing an ethylene production plant and specialising in Chemical Engineering sustainability at the end of my course highlighted these sections as fundamental toward a "clean" future. I'm proud to help where I can.
“Gareth was always patient with me. He made it comfortable for me to ask questions, add my input , correct me and took me step by step in my design project. Very knowledgeable in the subject and thorough in his lessons and his approach was amazing. Very kind too. I’m forever grateful for his assistance and understanding. Thanks ”
Musa
“Gareth is excellent at explaining problems and solution methods. He also involves me in each question and makes sure I understand. He is always ready to assist.”
Aarique
“He went over and above to bring me new revision questions in order to further test my ability in heat transfer. As well as always bringing enthusiasm to the lessons with a sense of excitement that helps me to be more involved and keen on the learning material.”
Keane
“Very willing to go that extra mile ”
Hayley
“I thought he would be like every other math tutor but he help me understand when I was struggling ”
